Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, MARIE CURRY is blowing German rap into a new level of existence. First as a singer with Neonschwarz, then as a rapper and solo artist with features from Captain Gips to Sookee, the Hamburg native has cemented her image as an all-round talent in the German-language music sector in recent years. Emancipated but also equipped with a down-to-earth attitude that unites artist and feminist, Marie Curry makes versatile rap music full of unconventional ideas. Tracks such as “Schlafes Schwester” and “Nag Champa” show a knack for production that can easily compete with female artists from the USA thanks to a lyrical mastery from the heyday of German rap music. But nostalgia is not necessary here, for this woman combines and celebrates everything that has always characterised hip-hop: beats for the neck, lyrics for the head, and a vibe for any situation in life.

BODEGA counter the noise of the present with a disarming signature sound that blends nostalgia and modernity to create undefinable aural sensations. The five-piece band from Brooklyn are inspired by the post-punk of the 1980s but also integrate indie rock and dance punk from the 2000s to create a danceable and often satirical mix of contemporary music. The edgy sound is supported by lyrics that deal with everything from the proto-dystopian state of the USA and LinkedIn poster culture to pressing issues of our social coexistence that are difficult to grasp despite their urgency. On their penultimate album, “Broken Equipment” (2022), BODEGA made it clear that they are a band that can transcribe political satire into incredibly stirring music without raising a finger. This year saw the release of their follow-up album, “Our Brand Could Be Yr Life”, which features singles such as “Tarkovski” and proves that these five musicians can do just about any balancing act without having to bend over backwards.

As the front man of the band Black Midi, GEORDIE GREEP has had his finger bang on the pulse of contemporary experimental rock from England in recent years. The singer, songwriter, guitarist and artistic all-rounder is equally at home creating a penetrating Morricone-like spaghetti western sound as he is with making crashing avant-prog, finely crafted math rock or dark post-punk. Coupled with sophisticated storytelling and his idiosyncratic vocals, songs penned by Greep always go beyond mere attempts at fusing the maximum number of eclectic styles possible. The highly talented young musician’s songwriting reflects influences from his past as well as the visions of a new form of rock music that he himself has pioneered. From King Crimson to Miles Davis, from gospel to Argentinian tango, from John Eliot Gardiner to the Boredoms – Geordie Greep concocts an artistic elixir from ingredients that others deem simply incompatible.
